Can you convert oil boiler to gas
It is a heck of a lot easier and cheaper to convert verses install a new gas system. Are they as efficient? As Chris Da stated, this will not be as efficient as a new gas heating system, but it will be less costly for the heating bills than oil.
We like saving energy, but we have to save money too. I got a reply from someone that states : Is your current heating system steam or hot water?
If it is steam which it may very well be since its oil fired, you can not convert this boiler, as gas does not burn as hot, as oil, and boilers are manufactured way different depending on the energy source. I do not suggest you convert, trying to save money now will hurt you, any licensed plumber who will do this is a joke and is endangering you and anyone in that house, the venting of an oil fired boiler to gas fired boiler is different as well.
If its steam you will have to replace all radiators as they are not the same. Yeah, that's the "standard line". Shop around for somebody who is willing to do what YOU want, not what they want Somebody I know heard that same spiel, and I referred the guy I used for a conversion down the street.
Seems to be working fine for him. The gun conversion will be less efficient, any time you do a conversion its not as efficient. Some investor I know has a coal boiler converted to oil that he now wants to convert to gas. I said whats the efficiency? Around here the gas company won't hook you up, if you're using an old chimney without installing a new chimney liner. Chris Da i see you are in Phoenixville PA. Do you know anyone who can do this for me?
I don't have the time or the patience to do it myself, and NJ would never allow it anyway. Contrary to what several people have replied, it is not an uncommon nor unsafe practice. Many of the people on this board whom consider themselves expert investors really have no idea. Anyone with a decent line of credit and access to a realtor with half a brain could purchase a house and hire a bunch of ding dongs to rehab and sell it the last year. I would be willing to bet in the coming year, all these expert flippers won't have much to say..
That being said, any decent HVAC company could perform this task. It's called a gas gun conversion. As long as the boiler is in good condition, there are no issues. This takes all of an hour if that. Consistent with other green engineering projects , natural gas emits significantly reduced emissions of sulphur oxide, particulate, and mercury.
At the end of the day, the main deciding factor is cost. The cost of oil-fueled boiler systems and oil continues to be high with not much concrete indication of these prices dropping in the near future. Other incurring costs for oil-based boiler systems include the following:.
Besides these small costs that add up to a hefty budget, other oil factors play a role in motivating this green engineering conversion from oil to natural gas. This includes the environmental risks of oil leaks and spills, as well as the high levels of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere further polluting the air.
Natural gas is quickly becoming a popular form of fuel, especially within the United States. For this reason, natural gas boiler conversions are becoming a popular green engineering practice.
Here are some of the benefits to natural gas:. Before converting a boiler system from oil to natural gas, factoring in costs is an important step in the process. These costs are considered to be an average, however, they should give a clear indication of how to budget and what the conversion entails from a monetary perspective. The below table will give an average indicator of costs over a broad range of requirements for a new or converted boiler system:.
From the above finance table, the cost of converting or replacing your oil boiler with a natural gas boiler will vary according to each situation and presented needs. For now, this is a good indicator of the costs that can be incurred.
Please note that the above prices may reflect differently on your quote and merely serve as a guide. The above requirements will also vary as per the situation, however, testing the tank and soil, connecting the house to the gas line and meters, new chimney liner, permits, and fire inspection are among the more standard tasks to be conducted before concluding the conversion of the boiler to natural gas.
Should the tank be underground, it is advisable to ascertain the scope of repairs or replacement required. With this being the highest cost in converting oil boilers to natural gas, a savings plan could go a long way in preparing for the conversion. When converting a boiler system from oil to natural gas, some combustion parameters should be taken into account. Within these parameters are indicators of the nature of natural gas which is a highly flexible, yet consistent, type of fuel.
These considerations further assist in preparing for the conversion as well as giving a better understanding of what to expect from the conversion. Maintaining the correct amount of burners within the boiler system is crucial in ensuring optimal heat and functionality. Too little or too many burners can result in eventual damage to the boiler system and burners. This will ultimately result in inefficient heating and increased expenses.
This serves as a base line for heat and required burners. For more information, read here. Reduced emissions can be expected with natural gas, which is why this is considered a green engineering project. Mercury emissions are almost non-existent, allowing for natural gas to be less toxic to the overall atmosphere. Natural gas has minimal to no traces of sulphur, although traces of mercaptan and SO2 can be found. Natural gas does generate traces of Particulate Matter PM found in the combustion air flow.
In addition, natural gas has lowered fuel-bound nitrogen with less air required for combustion. Having access to gas supply is a basic requirement since natural gas will be used to produce heat in the central heating system after conversion. Thus, access to an existing gas line is required. Once this access has been established, further piping and valving is required to ensure that gas is transmitted safely and properly to the boiler.
Adequate pressure for the system should be at a minimum of 25 PSI. To further assist with regulating the safe use of gas within the boiler system, scanners should undergo an evaluation as a means to determine if they are sufficient or need replacing. The purpose of the scanner is to monitor the amount of high intensity radiation released into the UV zone. This is one of the disadvantages of natural gas since its radiation is much higher than that of oil or coal.
Although a green engineering professional is commonly contracted to convert a boiler system from oil to natural gas, a homeowner may have a role to play in this conversion.
This does not remove the professionals completely from the process. You can also switch between fuels. This will depend largely on your needs, the size of your home, and the area that needs to be heated.
Potential rebate incentives should also be considered for converting to natural gas through the National Grid. You would need to fill out the online application with your HVAC contractor to apply. Upgrading your heating system could save you money every month and end up being less costly than you think upfront. Natural gas is piped in from gas lines outside your home removing the risk of unexpectedly running low on the source of your home heating. The experts at Tragar are highly trained in oil to gas conversions in Nassau and Suffolk counties and will work with you on crafting a master plan for your home heating.
