The help how many pages

The font? The margins? Are there a lot of charts or pictures? You can make a page anything you want, as we all discovered when we started typing papers in school. A standard typed manuscript page i. A 50, word manuscript is about pages. That feels sooooooo short to me, for a novel, but YMMV.

More on that in a second. To figure out how we even got to 50k words, we need to look at the economics of books. Other formats of kids books have similar pricing ranges. No, of course not. The more materials it takes to make a book, including and espeically illustrations, color printing, special effects and elements on the cover, the more the price goes up.

I mean, really. Even in hardcover, it will feel thin and the consumer will perceive that as having less value than a longer novel. I love a slim novel. We are dumb and retailers are smart. Well, a publisher can just make my short novel a paperback then you might think. This can be true! The average time a book spends in hardcover is a year. You can think of this as publishers gouging the poor reader, but those are the same people you want to give you a big, fat advance so…. Back to 50k words.

It probably came about from editors talking to typesetters when books were too long or too short and the numbers averaged around to there. It became a kind of benchmark. But personally, I think that if you are writing a story and sail right past 50k words generally speaking, you probably have enough going on in your book—stakes, action, dialog, plot, characterization.

If you are struggling to get to 50k, or just eeking past it, then you might need to shore up something. Maybe your characters need to talk to each other more. You may be a minimalist, which, god bless you, but in my experience, it means you need something more in the story of your work, not just more words.

Again, most of this info here relates to adult and YA tbh hardcover novels. Ever notice how some celebrity books have big fonts or narrow margins or there are a lot of blank pages between chapters? Just another reminder that publishing is a business. These are all more reasons why your NaNo novel is not going to be publishable on Dec 1, aside from the need for editing and perspective.

Think about how you buy books. Word count matters, not just because agents and editors like to make hoops for writers to jump through, but because it matters all the way down the line, from the writing to the selling of a book. Say hi! All book publishers and book designers have a standard they go by to estimate page length.

Some go by pages; others go by words. One rule of thumb is you can get 60 percent of a manuscript page into one typeset page said manuscript being in point type, double-spaced, preferably Times New Roman, with one-inch margins on an 8. Another rule of thumb is you can get to words on a typeset page. So, a 55,word manuscript is about typeset pages, and a ,word manuscript is about typeset pages.

If you use the industry standard of point type, double-spaced, Times New Roman, one-inch margins, 8. Formatting your page this way will help your publisher determine ending page count no matter how they estimate pages.

There are no hard-and-fast rules for the number of pages in a book. There are, however, some guidelines. Novels are often between 40, and , words.

Subgenres vary. Mysteries and young adult books run between 40, and 80, words. Thrillers and epic fantasy often clock in at over , words.

The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America offers a less nebulous guideline for the coveted Nebula award: a short story is under 7, words; a novella is 17, to 39, words; a novel is 40, words or over.

Nonfiction books also vary tremendously in word count. Short and punchy books are 40, to 60, words, but many nonfiction books are lengthy: 80, words and up. In all cases, you can find an author who has successfully pushed the envelope one way or another. The best guideline you can follow is to make your book as long as it needs to be and no longer.

Some extreme examples of long books include. Marienbad My Love by Mark Leach. You can read it online at marienbadmylove. How did they do that? They made the trim size 8.

The Blah Story by Nigel Tomm. This book in multiple volumes is 3,, words and is 7, pages, according to Mental Floss. You can find the volumes online, but many are out of print.
